Robert Burns Love Poem: A Red, Red Rose
Robert Burns, a poor man, an educated man and a man ladiesâ € ™, is the representative Scotland, as well as whiskey, haggis, bagpipes and kilts. He lived a life shortened by rheumatic heart disease, 1759-1796, but his journey of life through poverty, informal education, disappointed love, nationalism, and literary and financial success can be identified by all Scots and men common worldwide. It has almost become a national symbol of all things Scottish. His life is like a love story with a happy ending.
The poet Robert Burns
Robert Burns € ™ s family raised seven children in small, rented farmland on the west coast of Scotland. The family cabin remains a proud tourist attraction. The family farm failed and the family moved from farm to farm. Life on the farm in western Scotland was harsh and Robert worked long hours with his father.
Burna € ™ s father recognized the value of education and managed to hire a local teacher to tutor Robert. It was a very bright student, mastering Shakespeare, current poets, French, Latin, philosophy, politics, geography, theology and mathematics. His father read the Bible at night around the fireplace of the cabin and Robert became an expert on the Bible and a devout Church member.
Robert Burns wrote his first poem at age 15. The poem was called â € and € œHandsome Nella was his first love for a girl named Nellie Blair. Throughout of his life, Mr. Burns was a charming and witty man, attracting the attention of many women. A dozen or more women can be identified as the inspiration for several poems. Burns wrote many famous love poems, including â € œâ, Red Gibert € € and â € œOne Fond Kiss.â
Hereâ € ™ s an excerpt from a œHandsome Nell. € €
â € OEO, once I loved a girl Bonnie,
Yes, and still love her;
And while that virtue warms my breast,
Iâ € ™ ll love my handsome Nell. €
Burns, in a comment later in this poem, said he had â € œnever had no idea or inclination of turning poet till I got once heartily in love, and rhyme and song were, in a sense, the spontaneous language of my heart.â €
The Turning Point
In 1786, at age 27, Robert Burns was through a turning point in his life. He suffered a disappointing love story with Jean Armor, who was pregnant with twins. The local community and Armor € ™ s father were outraged by the affair and her father rejected Burns € ™ s offer of marriage.
Despondent and depressed, Burns made plans to leave Scotland and sail to Jamaica in the West Indies. To finance the trip, Burns submitted a copy of his poems for publication.
The publication of 612 copies in a single volume, unbound was called â € œPoems, mainly in the Scottish dialect, â € times also known as â € œThe Kilmarnock Edition.â € The poems were well received in Edinburgh high society who were delighted with the poems and amazed that a poor farmer could write so well.
So instead of planning his escape to a new world, Burns planned a trip to Edinburgh. His confident attitude, ingratiate themselves with the style and obvious talent and intelligence popularized Burns and admiration. Soon, a second publication of his work was executed in Edinburgh.
The growing popularity
During his stay in Edinburgh, Robert Burns met printer James Johnson, who planned a project to print all songs popular in Scotland. This project caught Burns and embarked on a trip to Scotland to collect folk songs as possible. Burns collected more than 300 songs and wrote some himself as â € œâ, Red Rose.â €
One result of his travels throughout Scotland was that Robert Burns ingratiated all those he met and rose to national prominence and popularity.
The complete songs were published by Johnson in six volumes and by George Thomson in five volumes.
Another happy outcome of this turning point in Robert Burns € ™ s life is that he was able to return home and marry his beloved Jean Armor, now with the blessing of his family.
Robert Burns continued to collect and write songs for the Museum of Scottish music, an anthology of traditional Scottish lyrical poems, until his early death from rheumatic heart disease in 1796.
Within a few years of his death groups of Robert Burns € ™ s friends and supporters gathered to promote his memory and celebrate his life. In 1801, five years after his death, the groups met on the anniversary of his death, but later began to gather on the anniversary of his birth, Jan. 25. Now there are many Burns clubs and societies who celebrate his memory with dinners, including haggis, and readings of their works.
The poem, â € œâ, Red Gibert €
One of the most famous songs that Robert Burns wrote for this project and first published in 1794, was â € œâ, Red € Rose.â Burns wrote as a traditional ballad, four verses of four lines each.
â € œà, Red Gibert € begins with a quatrain containing two similes. Burns compares his love with a spring blooming rose and then with a sweet melody. These are popular poetic images and this is the most commonly cited verse in the poem.
The second and third increasingly complex stanzas, ending with the metaphor of â € œsands of life, â € or hourglass. On one side it gives us the image of his love lasting until the seas dry up and the rocks melt with the sun, wonderfully poetic images. Moreover, Burns reminds us of the passage of time and changes that result. , Who remembers the first stanza and its image of a red rose, newly born in June, we know from experience that change and deterioration over time. These are complex images and competition, typical of the more mature Robert Burns.
The final stanza poem closes ™ € s complexity with a farewell and a promise of return.
â € œà, Red Gibert € is written as a ballad with four stanzas of four lines each. Each stanza has alternating lines of four times, or iambic, and three days. The first and third lines having four iambic, consisting of an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable, as in da-dah, da-dah, da-dah, da-dah. The second and fourth lines have three iambic. This form of verse is well adapted for singing or recitation and originated in the time existed poetry in verbal and non-written form.
A Red, Red Rose
by Robert Burns
O my Luve as a red, red rose.
That the newly born in June;
O my Luve as Melodie
That is sweet play'd in tune.
Since you're right, my girl Bonnie,
So deep in Luve I;
And I still love you, my dear,
Until a'the seas gang dry.
Until a "band of sea dry, my dear,
And the rocks merger wi 'the sun:
However I Luve you, dear,
While the sands o'life spread.
And the rate WEEL you my only Luve!
And fare thee WEEL a while!
And I will come again, my Luve,
Tho 'it were ten thousand miles!
