Venice SimplonOrientExpress a legend in the making
The cars now make up the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express has a colorful history. They have gone through Europe's borders, operating with a number of different railway companies, each developed its own individual character and the creation of their own history. Sleep 3309 Car for example, was caught in a snow drift for 10 days in 1929, a hundred miles from Istanbul with a full complement of passengers who survived only the help of Turkish local visitors, sleeping car 3425 was used by King Carol of Romania.
The dawn of the era of luxury train travel back to 1864, George Mortimer Pullman as an innovative railway builder, created a train in Britain using the latest technology of the time and superior deluxe to anything else available in Europe at that time.
In the 1870s the first meals were served on board a train with cars and sleeping cars first room – the Pullman Limited Express began operating in 1881. It worked between London and Brighton and was the first train to be illuminated by electricity.
By the same time in Europe, Nagelmackers George began building luxury railway carriages and slowly proceeded to continental trains that George Pullman had done for trains in Britain. In 1881 he introduced the first dining car aboard a continental railway and later in 1883 sleeping cars were added to 4 October, the first Orient-Express operating train was inaugurated in Paris via Strasbourg, Vienna, Budapest and Bucharest in Romania Giugi.
In 1900 the age of rail travel in Europe was in full peak. In 1906, the Simplon tunnel was completed, along with Switzerland to Italy in the Alps. At 12 ½ miles long, was the longest tunnel in the world and greatly reduce travel Paris to Venice and in 1921 the Orient-Express is running a journey time Simplon-Orient-Express to Istanbul.
The 1920s and 1930s were the zenith of Orient-Express services to Royalty and celebrities fall into elaborate meals and fine wines while enjoying the company decadent mixed with spies and courtiers. This provided the perfect setting for Agatha Chritian murder on the Orient-Express in which detective Hercule Poirot investigates the murder of one of the passengers. In fact there has been a total of 19 books and a musical written about the Orient-Express.
The cancellation of ferry services across the border to travel during the Second World War ended this was great and in the years following the depression, the demand for luxury cars was reduced. Air transport, which was faster and cheaper deals another blow to Orient-Express, who managed to keep running until May 1977, his last trip by a single run-down sleeping car and three cars per day.
The train was nevertheless a "renaissance" when rail enthusiast, James B. Sherwood – a British businessman born in the United States bought two cars at auction in Monte Carlo and spent the next years and sixteen million dollars to locate, purchase and restore about 35 sleepers of the vintage Pullman dining cars. In 1982 Renaissance is completed with the opening race of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express from London to Venice and today remains the carriage of passengers in opulent luxury in Europe in one trip most romantic possible.
As you step aboard the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express today, again entered an era of elegance and refined service as tells your bronze grinding chamber, gleaming wood, linen and towels. Its cabin is an oasis of complete relaxation with a view to an ever-changing landscape. Passengers are served by cabin stewards throughout their journey to provide attentive but unobtrusive service.
Although the cabins are equipped to the highest level remember that these cars were originally built at a time to sleep on the train was a luxury in itself, and private facilities that we expect today were unknown. Each cottage features a compact basin, there is a shared toilet on the end of each car, but no bathrooms or showers on board.
Meals on board are comparable to best restaurants with all meals prepared on board by French chefs, using only the finest ingredients, which are taken into account during the train trip.
Breakfast and afternoon tea in his cabin, while brunch, lunch and dinner are served by Italian waiters in one of three dining cars – the Lalique, Etoile du Nord and Espagnol.
Today, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express makes regular trips between London, Paris and Venice, between March and November (from London to Folkestone section of the trip is in the Pullman Britain, another Orient-Express train and passengers are taken by luxury coach Le Shuttle through the Channel Tunnel train to join the mainland in Calais). It makes an annual trip from Paris to Istanbul, traveling through Vienna, Budapest, Bucharest and Varna and returning back to Venice. The year also makes trips occasional Rome, Prague, Vienna, Budapest and Krakow.
With an overnight journey to Venice from £ 1,595 per person for the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is not going to be a trip for all budgets, but for those who can afford it, or save for the ride of your life, this certainly is an experience that will live in your memories forever!
