What is it Mr. Man Carnival?

"What is this anyway, sir?" I asked as he handed it to me. I had won by tossing a coin on a wooden barrier that bounced around seemingly aimlessly before finally landing in some way.

The type crust age by the position of a local carnival squinted and he told me. "Why is a thin piece of glass from your mother will be proud to display in his cabinet cooking, child. Then he winked and leaned slightly toward me and whispered: "But here the people around us call pitchman glass."

That was long ago, but it was my personal introduction on what is now called Carnival Glass: a small plate of sweets, marigold with a quality iridescent color to it. The hallmark of Carnival Glass is the iridescent sheen on a piece of stained glass art in various designs and shapes. I took my home plate candy where it has found a home in the kitchen cupboard, most appreciated because I had won at a local fair in my hometown of Baltimore.

Years later, after I had grown up and left the old neighborhood, I remembered him when he was poking around an antique shop in seeking a collection of beer trays of age. Amid a fine display of glassware, age was a collection of carnival glass pieces. Glassware, sweet and compounds of various colors, but all that iridescent glitter clearly shown.

Prices ranged from cheap to very expensive and I must confess that I did not know what a piece more expensive than another. I found them all interesting, though.

My introduction to these pieces had arrived long ago in a local carnival set up on land vacant between two sections of townhouses in Baltimore. That production had been remarkable, but now as I watched the screen in front of me, my curiosity got the best me. That, and the sudden flashback to my childhood I have been sent back to do a little research on these pieces.

I went to my local library to learn more about them. I suppose I could have triggered the computer, but I felt that he preferred the atmosphere of a quiet corner in the old library where I could sit with a book reference some good and back in time so to speak.

The librarian pointed me in the right direction-to books of reference and the corner quiet. There is always something that touches my heart a special librarian and a fine spaghetti dinner in Little Italy, the latter would have to wait.

I pulled some books off the shelf and sat down on a old leather armchair. My mission was not to become an expert in the field, but only for enough knowledge to understand what it is. I was fascinated by these pieces were iridescent sheen. Also, do not want to feel stupid the next time I I was standing in front of a collection of this glassware. Mission accomplished.

I suppose one can say the true beginning of Carnival glass dates back to the discovery glass, mostly the old Roman glass, when it was discovered buried in the ruins was a beautiful iridescent natural finish, caused by the interaction of products chemicals in the soil over time.

In the last part of the 19th century several manufacturers, especially Tiffany, tried to duplicate the finish of winding silk products chemicals in the molten glass followed by several stages of heating with a final spray of metal solution before the final baking.

The beautiful pieces glass art made by this process were widely admired but they were definitely in the price range for the average person. It was not until the era of production massive early 20th century when pressed glass was introduced, anyone producing finished silk pieces for budget related bodies.

In 1905 Frank Fenton Fenton Glass Company began with his brother John. In 1907 there was a cheaper alternative to the high price of parts from other manufacturers iridized spraying pressed glass with metallic salts before the final firing stage. Although these pieces were mass produced, which were finished by hand with various forms part edges. Fenton referred iridized these parts as "Venice Art.

The Glass House became the U.S. Carnival Fenton and the Company became part of five major American manufacturers Carnival Glass. The other four were the Northwood Glass Company, Imperial Glass Company, Millersburg Glass Company and The Dugan Glass Company which later became the Diamond Glass Company. Of the five, the Fenton Glass Company is still the only manufacturer who still exist today, although they have stopped making carnival glass in the early 1930s to 1970.

The production boom was from 1907-1921 has been known as the classical period of production. Sometimes referred to as "poor man's Tiffany", these pieces were in vogue through 1918 after that the interest began to wane. In the early 1930s, American factories had stopped making them and the production went to manufacturers foreigners.

It was not until late 1950 according to which the collector's items soon became desirable. Unfortunately, most manufacturers did not mark their parts most copied designs and many of its competitors which makes it difficult even for experts to determine the origin of a piece. A notable exception was the Northwood Glass Company that marked their pieces of glass with an underscore and in circles 'N'

During the early 1900 cheap these attractive pieces of art glass were given as prizes at carnivals. However, the term "carnival glass" did not come into existence until the end of 1950. When collectors are interested in them. Then, heritage, like giving away prizes at carnivals earned them the name we know for now.

During the height of production, these beautiful pieces could be bought for less than $ 1 and came in many forms including plates, bowls, cups, bowls, vases, compotes, pitchers, jugs, cups, plates, candy, cream, baskets, candlesticks, and various other specialty designs.

The colors range from wonder, produced the first color to green, blue, amethyst, white, red and pastel colors. Today, the wonder is the less desirable, while the cakes are most suitable. The Designs can be found in flowers, fruits and animals. Grape and cable designs are very popular.

Besides color, shape and design of parts, these pieces were produced in various finishes: satin, radio, electric-satin cake and the most common.

The satin finish is smooth with a shine. The radio has a shiny watery and transparent. The pieces of cake, all produced by Northwood Glass Company, have modern décor. Finally, the finished Electricity is like a mirror gloss finish applied to all dark colors.

As mentioned, even collectors have trouble tracking the manufacturers of these parts. If the bug gets you and you become seriously interested in collecting the material of glass, you should invest time in doing some serious research. But they do in a bulky leather chair like me.

Flea markets, antique shops and, of course, eBay are good places to find parts Carnival glass. Make sure you have a good basic understanding of these pieces before you start hitting the flea markets. recently produced pieces obviously are not as useful as old and, of course, there are plenty of fakes around, so buyer beware. The value is determined by age, manufacturer, the state, finishing, design and color.

But even inexpensive pieces look great on any shelf. His personal collection must be just that – a collection representing their personal interests, regardless of cost. I have a low cost of marigold sweet dish in my collection that I am very fond of.
