Berlin iron jewelry refers to jewelry casting made during the 19th century in Germany.
History
The roots of Berlin iron jewelry back to the creation of? K nigliche Eisengiesserei bei Berlin or the Berlin foundry Real in 1804. The Real Berlin Casting began with the production of iron products, such as vases, are knives, candlesticks, bowls, plates and medals and more commercial items such as fences, bridges and garden furniture. The jewelry items first, such as long chains with links cast, were produced in 1806. Later, necklaces consisting of medallions and joined with links and wirework mesh were fabricated.
The production of jewelry iron reached its peak between 1813 and 1815, when the Prussian royal family urged all citizens to contribute their gold jewelry and silver in the financing of the uprising against Napoleon during the War of Liberation. In return, people were given iron jewelry such as brooches and rings, often with the words Gold gab ich f Eisen (I gave gold for iron) or Very das Wahl des Vaterlands (For the welfare of our country / country), or a portrait of Frederick William III of Prussia, on the back. Until then, the iron jewelry was only worn as a symbol of mourning (because of its black color) and a value very close to being attractive, but suddenly became a symbol of patriotism and loyalty and their obvious beauty, became popular overnight.
The number of pieces produced after 1950 began to decline, but it is still manufactured until the end of the century, when the form of composition. It is well known, but in 1916 a similar attempt was made in Germany to promote jewelry iron and fund the German participation in the First World War. This was done through the exchange of gold jewelry for iron medallion with the inscription: Gold gab ich zur Wehr, Eisen nahm ich zur Ehr (I give gold to our defense effort and to take iron for the honor). This attempt, however, was not as successful. Today Berlin Iron Jewelry are collector items and pieces of truth they are usually found in museums or private collections. The replicas are now widely manufactured and easy to obtain, especially via the Internet.
Styles
At first, the style of the designs, especially during the Napoleonic era, the Neo-Classical, which incorporates a lot replica molding drafts and cameos.
Since 1810 the style changed slightly to a miniature form of Gothic Revival, incorporating the pointed arch and lifted the widow of the Gothic cathedral, with less austere, more naturalistic motifs such as butterflies, clover plant (with three leaflets, as clover) and vine leaves.
The jewelry has a very fine lace detail and appearance, but despite his sometimes na? For more information see, seems to always appear dark and gloomy. Perhaps this is because most of the Berlin iron jewelry black lacquer to prevent oxidation of iron and increase its purpose as morbid mourning jewelry. Only a few examples rare were decorated with fine gold or silver settings in polished steel. Some also settled with medallions, imitating the classical Greek scenes in some of the work of Jasper the famous potter Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795), or medallions of contemporary portraits by James Tassie (1735-1799).
Manufacturing
For details of intricate molding thin slices to be produced as with Berlin Iron Jewelry, a very pure iron contains up to 0.7% phosphorus was used. This was done to make the iron a little more fluid than it normally would when molten. Although this type of phosphoric iron is quite hard and brittle, the force is not the main objective of this metal when used in jewelry. Molten iron was cast into cold metal molds.
