The Architecture of the beautiful Italian city of Modena
The Italian architecture is timeless, soft colors and nice to structures and little to offend which is always an impression of you.
Modena is a city located in northwestern middle of the Italian peninsula, and is most famous as the birthplace of Ferrari, but it is also right in the middle of the corridor stretching from Bologna Italian food, the father of Italian food of Parma ham and home to Modena. In addition to these Modena claims to fame is also home to one of the most beautiful cathedrals of Italy and wonderful architecture.
Modena has numerous complaints to fame is not only the hometown of Ferrari (the Italians other passion), was also the birthplace of the world, late and very famous Italian tenor, Luciano Pavarotti and is also one of the great cities of Emilia-Romagna and bars, the finest producer in the world vinegar, balsamic, among other things. If you are into your food of Emilia-Romagna region must be the Italian visit. But what is the real one, like Modena? Having visited many years ago Bologna has already exceeded by its beauty that had always promised myself I'd get to Modena one day.
Apart from the obvious things about Modena knew little about what I was looking forward greatly to learn more about the architecture of the Italian cities.
As soon as I arrived I went to the main square, when ever you come to an Italian city for the first time the main square is always a good starting point.
The Piazza Grande is the main square of Modena, and a Italian piazza that is great too, being home to the beautiful cathedral. It has to be one of the most beautiful churches anywhere and one of the most beautiful I've seen anywhere in the world. Building started in the cathedral in 1099. At the time of Modena was without a bishop as the one chosen by the Pope was not adopted by the locals, so Therefore, citizens of Modena managed and paid by the cathedral to be completed, some achievements.
The beautiful white stones covering the exterior of the cathedral were discovered during renovation work to be Roman tombstones, it was a surprise to restaurant employees and historians who even found inscriptions on the stones. The doors are adorned with sculptures of life and they really set the cathedral, apart from older cathedrals which usually have flatter a three-dimensional sculpture. The sculptures look magnificent in their white stones, but they look a bit mysterious to them due to the use of lead as the eyes, black eyes looking down at you from the beautiful white figures is strange.
Standing proudly on each side of the main entrance of the cathedral are two magnificent Roman lions, the door of the Piazza Grande is also guarded by two magnificent lions, this time from an Italian pink marble. I could spend hours in cathedrals just looking at the reliefs and sculptures, I always feel a bit disappointed to get out of a magnificent cathedral, for which no relief revels in historic tell a story.
Certainly not disappointed in Modena. On one side of the church under an arch that connects to a tower there is some wonderful carvings are believed to King Arthur and his knights, as well as scenes from Aesop's fables. My favorite of all was a calendar showing the months of the year complete with an agricultural task for the Italian to farmers will be held in the given month. This reminded me of a similar size I saw in the Palazzo Ducale in Venice.
In a later section was added to the cathedral in the 13th-14th century, this was a beautiful pink marble from Italy and is of a more Gothic appearance than earlier parts of the cathedral, but still well links with the former section, instead of looking like a bolt-on.
As with all Italian cities the main square is the focal point of the city and Piazza Grande is no different. Until 1931, the town square market place, but moved to a purpose built covered site is still held today. Although not the site for the market longer the square is still the place to meet people, take a walk or simply sit and enjoy an espresso.
Modena buildings are a wonderful terracotta color, the color type that lends itself beautifully to the Italian architecture, warm and soft to the eye. The good thing about Italy is that is still so in touch with their heritage, the citizens of Modena has to respect the heritage to the extent that the color of all buildings must fall within the local Council guidelines for maintaining the aesthetics of the city.
Walking through the narrow cobbled streets in places that you can actually sleep lost in the sense of Modena Italian history that seeps through its architecture. Modena has had an up and down history. Modena flourished under Roman rule, but then went into decline as a center of power until the late 16th century when the decision of the d'Este family, made his home. The family saw that he had fallen in Modena decreased and he realized he had potential and began to modernize the city to be one of the largest in Italy.
The d'Este family built their home, Palazzo Ducale (not to be confused with the Venetian palace of that name) on top of Modena existing castle. The spectacular palace still stands today, still in its original glory, it's unfortunate that now is an impregnable Italian military academy who have no access to the public.
After a couple of days walking in the beautiful city of Modena samples of the wonderful architecture that I realized I had not even taken the time to look further into the culinary heritage of Modena. Now that is something we expect.
